The Accounts & Loan Management (ALM) department serves as the main collections entity for George Mason University
Focused on delinquent accounts, the ALM staff directs their efforts to achieve the following objectives:
- Secure payment for delinquent student accounts with past due balances in compliance with collections laws and procedures established by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Oversee the repayment of awarded Perkins Loans through Campus Partners.
- Manage the repayment of Emergency Student Loans (ESL) provided by the Office of Student Financial Aid.
- Provide guidance and support to all university staff, departments, faculty and students on collections procedures and guidelines.

Failure to meet financial obligations to the university will result in other collection procedures, which include account referral to credit reporting bureaus, private collection agencies, the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Taxation, and the Office of the Attorney General. Past due accounts are subject to garnishments, liens, and judgments and the withholding of money from tax refunds. In addition to late fees and interest, delinquent accounts will be assessed additional collection costs equal to thirty percent of the past due balance, reasonable attorney fees, and other administrative costs.

Per the Virginia Debt Collection Act (§2.2-4800 et seq.), all delinquent accounts with past due balances are assigned to authorized collection agencies each semester as outlined in the University’s catalog: George Mason University Catalog. Additionally, the University may also refer delinquent student accounts to the Office of the Attorney General and the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Taxation’s Individual Set-Off Debt Collection Program.

The Virginia Department of Taxation’s Debt Set Off Program is a legal remedy to secure payment for all outstanding debts owed to the university.
